Brickwok and was founded by history television people who wanted to escape the world of telly and make books, boardgames, videos and animation. We started off by making YouTube videos as HistroMax in early 2026, and followed up by releasing our first ever board game 'The Terror: Paris, 1793' in June.

Why board games? Well, we've found that most historically themed board games are just that: themes. Window dressing. Poorly researched and often wildly inaccurate.

But 'The Terror' is a history game made for history buffs by history buffs. The kind of people who watch period dramas just to point out the historical innaccuracies.

Behind every game is an alarming amount of research, stacks of second-hand history books, and at least one argument about whether a particular style of tricorn hat is accurate to the period. Months of research go into creating our games, and they're cram-packed with real history. So much so with 'The Terror' that we ended up writing an accompanying history book to go with it. And that's the Brickwork guarantee! Historical accuracy and real educational value without compromising on the fun.

◊   The Method   ◊

How a game gets made.

1

Pick an era

We choose a moment in history that we love that we think deserves a closer look... From Rome to the French Revolution.

a year of debate
2

Get designing

Our games are supposed to mirror the historical events as closely as possible. Once we have a period the next step is to think about how we represent it in game form!

the fun part
3

Do the research

Game design and historical research go in tandem. The better we grow to understand the subject, the better we can fit the game to the history.

4

Build the box

The final step is putting pen and paintbrush to paper and designing box and board. For full historical immersion attention to detail in the design is everything.
